TALENTS AND HOBBIES: do they really differ?

TALENTS AND HOBBIES: do they really differ?

Hello, successful individual, i hope you had a great weekend. YnM is here again to give her lovers a great week with daily inspirational posts.
THE GOLDEN LIST OF PEOPLE WHO CAN NEVER SUCCEED series will now feature every Saturday until the book is published. Anticipate!

Today, i want to clear the rough path on "Talents and Hobbies". This is one aspect of life that teenagers and youths alike are most confused.

What is your talent?
What is your hobby?
Any difference between both?

As children, our parents and even outsiders were always the ones pointing us towards our "supposed talent". It is correct that as a little child, nobody knows you better than your parents; but it is also correct that, as a youth, nobody knows you better than your very own self. So the youthful age is the age for checks and balances. Check to verify those areas your parents told you that you are good at (your supposed talent).

Is that really your talent or are they just false reflections of who you are?
Is that really your talent or was it just a childhood hobby?

Do not confuse your talent with your hobby.
You may not be so good at something, but you love to do it anyway. Likewise, you may be very good at something and still not love to do it. The first describes "Hobby", while the latter describes "Talent".
So many people have confused themselves and others by saying "Your talent is what you love doing". Well, In my opinion , that's wrong. Your hobby is what you love doing, but your talent is what you do freely. Some people who list "singing" as a hobby, are bad singers. The moment they mention "Singing" as a hobby, the common perception nowadays is " oh! she must be a great singer", but no! That's not always the case.
As a little girl, my Aunt once told me "Your talent is that thing you find yourself doing most of the time" but no, that's the definition of your hobby. You just love doing it, even though you might not be good at it. To butress this point, take a good look at Choir members in Churches or any band. You have some who are very good. You have some who are manageable. You have some who are bad singers. The truth is, no choir or band instructor wants a bad singer as part of the team, but because some of them "Love to sing", they join. Some who are great singers are sometimes reluctant or show one negative attitude or the other towards singing, maybe beause they joined simply because they have a great voice, not really because they love to sing. You see the difference? Some love it, but can't do it, while some can do it, but don't love it. That's the difference between talent and hobbies.
Now, don't get me wrong. I'm not saying "Everybody does not love their talent. I'm simply saying that it's a wrong perception to think that your talent is what you love doing the most.
Some people have talents(what they do freely) and they love doing it. So it's a great combination to have your hobby as a talent. Although, not all talents come as a hobby. For the fact that it is your talent does not mean that you will love or embrace it instantly.
Personally, I have a talent in singing. I love to sing and by God's Grace, i sing pretty well. That's my talent and it's also my hobby. I realised this talent since age Six, and I happily embraced it since then, but between age twelve and thirteen, i realised my teachers commeded my writing skills in school and I realised I have a talent in that too. So, on about four occasions, I wrote poems and posted them on a social media platform, which so many people applauded. I then decided to try writing poems everyday. I kept struggling with this daily-poem-writing decision; sometimes it flows freely, sometimes it's a struggle. But, prior to opening this blog, I realised that there is something i freely write- Motivational/Inspirational writings. I looked down on it because it is not common, especially among youths; but the day I decided to embrace it was the first day I ever felt extreme joy in doing something i consider "Worthwile". I have grown to love it and I keep loving it. Now i am building it into a hobby.
Do you now understand the difference between a hobby and a talent?
I have heard some people say "I used to have a talent in doing this or that". The truth is "TALENTS CAN SLEEP" and they can be "REAWAKENED". If you fail to realise/build your talent, you might lose it for a while, until you stir it up again; and the truth remains that you cannot talk about a book without referring to the author. GOD IS THE GIVER OF TALENTS. So, acknowledge him while building yourself. WORK ON YOUR TALENT. BUILD IT BY PRACTICING IT.

YOUR HOBBY GIVES YOU PERSONAL SATISFACTION, BUT YOUR TALENT STANDS YOU OUT, WHETHER YOU'RE SATISFIED OR NOT.
Despite the difference between a hobby and a talent, you can enjoy both benefits if you build your talent as a hobby. There's a sense of fulfilment in that.
Keep doing what you love doing. Build what you do freely. Work on your love for your talent. Don't let your hobbies overshadow your talent, else it sleeps. Your Talent is a jealous lover. She wants you all to herself. Build her FIRST! TURN HER INTO A HOBBY!.
Have a fulfilling time discovering the real you!

I hope this post motivated you! Share with friends too. Never forget also, you are the reason i keep doing what i do.  You readers are my reason for this blog.

  1. Well spoken. Your maturity and understanding keep surprising me from time to time. Permit me to add little.
You see, I keep telling people, who are confused about destiny, that one's destiny is not what he just loves doing best. Destiny and talent are synonymous. Your natural talent takes you to destiny. Several people find themselves in fields where they earn much money and because of that they love it and assume it to be their destinies. Or because they see someone doing that particular thing so beautifully and well, they will love it and want to do the same assuming it to be their talent. But no. That's not the yardstick to discovering what God has deposited in you that you may grow to become. As you rightly said, hobby is totally different from talent and destiny. Hobby is a passion that comes from you but talent is deposited in you by God.
What I have come to discover as my destiny now is what I detasted the most in the past because of the sacrifices involve in it. But having discovered it, I just began to love it so that I can flow in it. It's therefore important that our talents become our hobbies for easy flowing.
Moreover, one can have more than one talent. So it's up to us to discover how many we were born with.
May the Lord increase your understanding the more sister.
