“It’s easy to procrastinate when you’re having fun, and in college you have a lot of fun, and so it’s a lot easier to do the fun and immediate gratifications first,” Whittaker said.
Hello Successful individual!
Lovely week running through right?
Okay, real quick, let's deal with the issue of procrastination.
This topic, among others, is one that affects and interests a considerable number of people; old and young alike.
From Whittaker's statement, it is obvious that people procrastinate, not because they are lazy, but because they set their priorities wrong. Procrastination is not a question of laziness. It's a question of Priority. However you choose to see it, it still boils down to Priority. Instead of doing homework that must be submitted the next day, Rebecca would rather play with her friends, sleep or even sit and do nothing; that is what she chooses to do at that moment. She is not lazy. She is just doing what she feels is more important at that moment.
NOTE: What is really important might not be what we consider important. They are two different things.
Most times, we humans want to go for what we consider important and not what is really important.
To pull down a tree, you must first deal with the root, except you want to cut the tree halfway.
Now, to deal with the tree of Procrastination, we must deal with the root of Priority. The answer to the question of Procrastination is Priority.
One funny thing about us humans, is that we always make issues seem bigger than they really are. One of such issues is Procrastination. PROCRASTINATION IS NOT A BIG DEAL. If you let it become a big deal, it will remain a big deal until you change your mind.
So many books have been written about this issue because the world sees it as a big deal. But for you reading this post right now, erase the mindset that procrastination is a big issue. It is not. If you tell yourself it is, then it is. If you tell yourself it's not, then it's not. Your mind processes what you allow it to.
If you're struggling with Procrastination, here are the three steps to get rid if it:
1. Lay Out Your Tasks.
2. Have A Strong Determination To Carry It Out.
3. Carry It Out Strictly.
Sounds simple right? It is that simple.
Remember what you were taught about scale of preference?
Here is a quick reminder.
A scale of preference is a list of wants or needs that a person writes or comes up with, in order of IMPORTANCE.
Now, Scale of Preference can and should be applied in our daily life. As simple as the first step is, so many people still struggle with it.
When you wake up in the morning, here is a mirror layout you can use:
MY TASKS FOR THE DAY.
TASK 1: PRAY AND STUDY BIBLE (7:00-7:45am)
TASK 2: BRUSH MY TEETH
TASK 3: DO HOUSE CHORES
TASK 4: BATHE AND HAVE BREAKFAST
TASK 5: READ TWO COURSES AND ANSWER QUESTIONS ON THEM
TASK 6: GO TO SCHOOL
TASK 7: TAKE A NAP
TASK 8: WASH CLOTHES
TASK 9: CHAT ONLINE
TASK 10: SLEEP
NOTE: You can also allocate time to each task like TASK 1 above. It is interesting when you're trying to beat time for a specific task.
This is what I do every morning. It can help you too. It helps you to set your priorities right. Sometimes you want to do certain things at a particular time when you have a laid out task, but you should be disciplined enough to set your priorities right. This brings us to STEP 2: HAVE A STRONG DETERMINATION TO CARRY IT OUT. Not just determination, but strong one. Don't just say "I'll do it". Create a mindset that if you don't do it, you have failed throughout that day.
STEP 3: CARRY IT OUT STRICTLY. Stubbornly carry out the task. No matter how many more tasks come up, strive to follow the ones you laid out, while considering the new ones, depending on how important they are. Remember to also apply the mindset you created in STEP 2.
It is actually fun, when you lay out tasks and then tick them as you carry them out.
There is a great sense of responsibility that overwhelms you when you lay out tasks to carry them out, and a great sense of fulfilment and accomplishment when you eventually carry them out.
Procrastination is not so big a deal.
Simply lay out the task, have a strong determination to carry out the task, and accompany your determination with successful actions.
SWEETHEART, IT IS AS EASY AS IT SOUNDS.
